The Chauri Chaura incident took place in the year 1922 in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. This was the first incident in which police personnel were considered martyrs when they fell victim to the wrath of revolutionaries.
One of the reasons behind it was that the police were doing their duty. While the satyagrahis who were killed were also considered martyrs. Following this, every year February 4 is celebrated as the day of martyrdom.
The historic Chaurichaura incident took place 100 years ago today. The central government has decided to celebrate the centenary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the event.
Mahatma Gandhi boycotted foreign clothing, appealed to drop out of English education and run a charkho. At that time the non-cooperation movement was at its peak across the country. Satyagrahis gathered at Bhopa Market in Chauri Chaura on February 4, 1922. The police station declared it illegal when they were holding a peace march. A police constable on the spot trampled on Gandhi's hat.
As a result, the Satyagrahis became indignant and the Polic workers opened fire on the peace march. 11 Satyagrahis were martyred and more than 50 were injured in this incident. The police had run out of ammunition. The angry mob ran after the police. The satyagrahis filled cans of kerosene from a shop and set fire to the police station.
In the incident, the police tried to flee from there but the mob grabbed them and pushed them back into the fire. Twenty-three police personnel, including Thanedar, were burnt alive in the incident. Gandhiji considered this incident violent and withdrew the non-cooperation movement. The Gorakhpur court delivered its judgment on January 9, 1923. It convicted 172 people and sentenced them to death. While 2 persons were sentenced to 2 years in prison.

47 people were acquitted. The Gorakhpur Congress Committee appealed to the High Court against the verdict. At that time all these cases were being fought by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. The verdict came on April 30, 1923. 19 were hanged, 16 were sentenced to black water, all others were sentenced to 8, 5 and 2 years. 3 people sentenced to 2 years for storming while 38 people were released.
