Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dream project 'Statue of Unity' has been completed in just 33 months and has become the world's largest 182-meter statue of Sardar Patel. The biggest feature of this statue is that 135 metric tons of iron was collected from more than 5 lakh farmers across the country in the form of old farming tools and 109 tons of it was used to lay the foundation of this statue of Sardar. In 2010, CM Modi of Gujarat announced the construction of the statue.
At a press conference in Ahmedabad on October 7, 2010, when Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he announced the construction of the monument. At that time this scheme was presented to the country as a proud contribution of Gujarat. Then the construction started on October 31, 2013 and exactly 5 years later, i.e. on October 31, 2018, the construction was completed on the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. One lakh 70 thousand cubic meters of concrete was used in this project. The
statue of Sardar has been constructed by Larsen & Trubro Company at a cost of Rs 2989 crore. The statue is a composite type structure and has a bronze plating clearing over the Sardar statue, i.e. the skin of the statue is made of bronze. The project involved 2.10 lakh cubic meters of cement-concrete, as well as 2000 tonnes of bronze. 6500 tons of structural steel and 18,500 tons of reinforcement bars are used. The statue is made of 22500 metric tons of cement. The area of this monument is 20 thousand square meters and it is 12 square kilometers. The area is surrounded by an artificial lake. At a height of 182 meters, which includes a 175-meter statue and a 25-meter height of the pedestal, 3,000 tourists from the gallery will be able to see the Vidhyanchal mountain range with a dam.
Butterfly Garden: Spread over 6 acres, this vast park is home to 45 species of plants and 38 species of butterflies.
The project was planned by Unity Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust to make 5,000 metric tonnes of iron from 6 lakh villages . What is special about this scheme is that the iron required for the idol and the farming implements used in it were collected from farmers in villages across India in the form of donations. Donations from more than 5 lakh Indian farmers were expected for this. A three-month nationwide campaign was launched to collect millions of pieces from 6 lakh villages. More than 5000 metric tons of iron was collected during this period and construction of the statue finally started on 31st October 2014.

Who made the original design of the Statue of Unity?
The original designer of the Statue of Unity was Ram Sutar, who was born in Gondur near Dhule in Maharashtra. Ram Sutar, 93, is the country's oldest sculptor and has created one-of-a-kind sculptures in his lifetime. Along with Unity, he has also designed a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji. The proposed statue of Shivaji is to be placed on an artificial island in the sea off Mumbai.
