Today's history: 24 countries come together to save the ozone layer; Ozone Prevention Day has been celebrated since 1995 when a bomb exploded on Wall Street 100 years ago.




Every year September 16 is celebrated by the United Nations as the International Day for the Prevention of the Ozone Layer. 

The event is reminiscent of the 1987 Montreal Protocol, which was commemorated by 24 countries working together. 

In Montreal these countries told the world not to ruin the ozone layer. It promised to stop using substances that could damage the ozone layer. On 19 December 1994, the UN General Assembly decided to celebrate the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer on 16 September. The first Ozone Day was celebrated on September 16, 1995.

There was a four-month lockdown to control the corona virus. Many strict rules still apply today. This has led to a reduction in pollution levels and has increased the importance of Ozone Day. 

A study by the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Dehradun has found that the lockdown has reduced the amount of ozone-depleting substances and has strengthened the quality of the ozone layer by 1.5 to 2 times.
