New Delhi: Dussehra or Vijayadashami marks the end of the nine-day long festive journey of Navratras. While the northern and southern parts of the country commemorates it as the day of Ram's victory over Ravana, the eastern part remembers the slaying of Mahisasura - the buffalo demon by Durga. Though each state adds its own flavour to Dussehra, its symbolism remains the same - the triumph of good over evil. 

This yThe day of Dussehra also holds a lot of importance for Buddhists in the country as it is on this very day, that the famed king of the Mauryan Empire - Ashoka pledged non-violence and converted to Buddhism. 

Irrespective of cultures or beliefs, the connotation of Dussehra remains the same - the onset of a new journey after the end of evil. ear, the day is being celebrated on September 30.

In Sanskrit, the word 'Dus' means evil and 'Hara' stands for destruction and Dussehra essentially signifies restoration after chaos and destruction. It is symbolic of new beginnings and therefore marks the onset of preparations for the festival of lights - Diwali, which comes twenty days after the festival.

             

Enormous effigies of Ravana, who had abducted Sita, are burnt along with that of his brothers Meghanada and Kumbakaran in the northern and southern part of the country as part of Dussehra celebrations. Ramlila performances, which involve people enacting the life and glory of Ram through short plays, also form an essential part of the revelry.

The eastern part adds its own flavour to the grandeur where it is celebrated as Vijayadashmi - the day of Durga's return to heaven after purifying the world of evil forces. One of the most popular features of this day is the Shindur Khela, where married women smear vermilion on each other after making offerings to the goddess, to keep the joys of their married lives intact.

As Ravana is burnt, cries of joy fill up Ramlila maidaans.  At the same time, people prepare to bid tearful farewell to the Goddess as she prepares for her ride back to heaven in a different vaahan each year - this year her vaahanis a horse. 

The day of Dussehra also holds a lot of importance for Buddhists in the country as it is on this very day, that the famed king of the Mauryan Empire - Ashoka pledged non-violence and converted to Buddhism.

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan To Recruit 546 Teachers In North Eastern Zone, Notification Released

          

New Delhi: Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) has notified recruitment for 546 teaching postsunder special recruitment drive for North Eastern zone. The official notification released on the website kvsangathan.nic.in says that through this recruitment will be made in the States of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Online registration will begin on 3 October. The registration portal will remain open for 15 days (closing on 17 October 2017). As of now, KVS has not released the details of the recruitment, except an indicative notification.

The recruitment advertisement will be published in Hindi, English and regional language newspapers on 30 September 2017. 

Out of the total number of posts, 220 are for primary teacher (PRT; Group B) and 144 for Trained Graduate teacher (TGT; Group B).
        

In March 2017, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar had announced that government will fill up 10000 vacancies in various Kendriya Vidyalayas in the country in this academic year. Last year, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) had announced recruitment for Principal, PGT, TGT and Primary Teacher (Music) post on 27 September 2016, through Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan Recruitment Examination 2016 (KVSRE 2016). If previous year trend is considered, the written exam may be scheduled in December 2017.

As per the confirmation given by KVS officials, candidates can expect the result for teacher recruitment exam held in 2016 within first week of October 2017.

The festival will have a thematic session on 'Deep Ocean Research', a science teachers workshop focusing on the Northeast, a science film festival, industry academia interactions and summits on grassroot innovators and start-ups.
A total of Rs 10 crore will be spent on the project, a senior government official said. The cost will be split by the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) all under the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

This is the third IIS festival, which has been organised since the NDA government came to power in 2014. The first two were held at IIT-Delhi and National Physical Laboratory, Delhi.

The organisers will also attempt a Guinness World Record by holding a "largest biology class" of 1000 students.

Top scientists from the government are expected to participate in the four-day festival which will be held from October 13-16 at IIT-Chennai.

Central University Of Karnataka To Recruit For Faculty Posts, 103 Vacancies

              

New Delhi: Central University of Karnataka (CUK) has invited applications for recruitment to teaching posts. After submitting online applications, candidates shall have to send the hardcopy of online application along with all enclosures to CUK before 10 November 2017. While submitting the online application, candidates should mention their email address precisely as further correspondence regarding the recruitment will be done through emails. 'The e-mail date will be considered as the official date of dispatch and receipt of communication. Tata Motors bags Rs 1,120 crore order for 10,000 e-cars from EESL

           

NEW DELHI: State-run Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) today said it will procure 10,000 electric cars from Tata Motors, an order valued at around Rs 1,120 crore. 

Tata Motors will supply the electric vehicles (EVs) in two phases with 500 e-cars in the first phase in November 2017 and the remaining 9,500 electric vehicles (EVs) in the second phase, EESL said in a statement. 

EESL said Tata Motors quoted the lowest price of Rs 10.16 lakh, exclusive of GST in the competitive bidding. 

"The vehicle will be provided for Rs 11.2 lakh, which will be inclusive of GST and comprehensive 5 year warranty which is 25 per cent below the current retail price of a similar e-car with 3 year warranty," it added. 

"All these 10,000 electric cars will be will be procured within nine months period from the date of issue of letter of intent," EESL Managing Director Saurabh Kumar told PTI. 

Tata Motors was selected through an international competitive bidding aimed at increased participation, it said. 

Commenting on the development, Tata Motors CEO and MD Guenter Butschek said: "EESL tender provided us the opportunity to participate in boosting e-mobility in the country, at the same time accelerate our efforts to offer full range of electric vehicles to the Indian consumers." 

               The company has been collaboratively working to develop electric powertrain technology for its selected products, he added. 

While it did not specify which electric car it will supply, industry sources said the company will supply electric version of its compact sedan Tigor. 
Other companies, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and Nissan had also participated in the tender and bids for Tata Motors and M&M were opened, EESL said. 

When asked why Nissan's bid was not opened, Kumar said: "It did not qualify for the technical bid or request for qualification (RFQ). 

EESL claimed that its tender was for the world's largest single electric vehicle procurement. 

The company, which comes under the Ministry of Power, further said along with procurement of 10,000 EVs through bidding, it would also identify a service provider agency. 

"This agency, also appointed through competitive bidding, will carry out end-to-end fleet management of the procured vehicles for the concerned government customer," the statement added. 

Apart from continuing to aggregate demand, EESL will also be responsible such as coordination between appointed agencies, monitoring and supervision, reporting, complaint redressal and payments, it said. 

Citing a Niti Aayog report, EESL said making India's passenger mobility shared, electric, and connected can cut the country's energy demand by 64 per cent and carbon emissions by 37 per cent in 2030. 

"This would result in a reduction of 156 Mtoe (million tonne oil equivalent) in diesel and petrol consumption for that year & at USD 52/bbl of crude, this would imply a net savings of roughly Rs 3.9 lakh crore in 2030," the company said.

Nasa delays launch of James Webb Space Telescope to 2019

Washington: Nasa has pushed the planned launch of its $8.8 billion James Webb Space Telescope from October 2018 to the spring of 2019, citing spacecraft-integration issues.

                 

The successor to the famed Hubble Space Telescope, Webb will now launch between March and June 2019 from French Guiana, following a schedule assessment of the remaining integration and test activities, Nasa said.

The All the rigorous tests of the telescope and the spacecraft to date show the mission is meeting its required performance levels, it said. Existing programme budget accommodates the change in launch date, and the change will not affect planned science observations.

“Webb’s spacecraft and Sun-shield are larger and more complex than most spacecraft,” said Eric Smith, programme director for the James Webb Space Telescope at Nasa. “The combination of some integration activities taking longer than initially planned, such as the installation of more than 100 Sun-shield membrane release devices, has meant the integration and testing process is just taking longer,” said Smith.

“Considering the investment Nasa has made, and the good performance to date, we want to proceed very systematically through these tests to be ready for a Spring 2019 launch,” he said. Webb is an international project led by Nasa with its partners ESA and the Canadian Space Agency. telescope will be the world’s most powerful space telescope ever built, serving thousands of astronomers worldwide, according to the US space agency.

The 6.5 metre diameter infrared-optimised telescope is designed to study an extremely wide range of astrophysical phenomena, including the first stars and galaxies that formed, the atmospheres of nearby planets outside our solar system, and objects within our own solar system.

“The change in launch timing is not indicative of hardware or technical performance concerns,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for Nasa’s science mission directorate. “Rather, the integration of the various spacecraft elements is taking longer than expected,” said Zurbuchen.

As part of an international agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) to provide a desired launch window one year prior to launch, Nasa recently performed a routine schedule assessment to ensure launch preparedness and determined a launch schedule change was necessary.

The spacecraft itself, comprised of the spacecraft bus and Sun-shield, has experienced delays during its integration and testing. The additional environmental testing time of the fully assembled observatory — the telescope and the spacecraft — will ensure that Webb will be fully tested before launching into space, NASA said.

IGNOU Extends Last Date For December 2017 Term End Exam Applications

NEW DELHI:  Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has extended the last date for accepting the examination forms for December 2017 term end examination. The last date is extended till October 31, 2017 without late fees. 

The IGNOU candidates must ensure that they have already submitted the assignments as applicable for the courses they are filling in the examination form. 

Otherwise, Hall Tickets of term end examinations will not be uploaded/issued for the courses for which assignments have not been submitted by the candidates.

The candidates are also required to pay examination fee of Rs. 120/-per course for theory as well as practical. 

Dates for submission of examination forms started from September 1 and it will now go on till October 31 without late fee.

Then the candidates will be given a chance to apply for term end examinations with a late fee of Rs. 1000/ from November 1 to November 15, 2017.

Results of IGNOU June, 2017 term-end examinations are available on University website, www.ignou.ac.in.

Hall Ticket towards permission to enter the Examination Centre will be uploaded on the University Website 10 days before the commencement of the examinations. 

Candidates may download the Hall Ticket from the University website (www.ignou.ac.in) and report at the examination centre along with the Identity Card issued by the University.

Navratri 2017: Can We Drink Coffee During Navratri Fast (Vrat)?

Hindus across India are celebrating Navratri 2017, which is slated to end on 29th September, 2017, followed by Vijaydashmi or Dussehra. The nine days of festivities of Sharad Navratri worships various incarnations of Goddess Durga and celebrates the triumph of good over evil. This is also the time when devotees observe a period of fast, following a restricted diet to cleanse the body and also prepare it for the change in season, from monsoon to winter. Food ingredients like whole grains (wheat and rice), table salt, non-vegetarian items, alcohol, onions, garlic and few other ingredients are a strict no. But what about your morning cup of coffee? Is that allowed?

The answer is not that simple. While some people believe that only tea is allowed to be consumed during the fasting period, coffee lovers stand against the claim. Then there are those who believe that both the beverages are allowed to be consumed during the fasting period. Renowned food writer Anoothi Vishal says, "There is nothing written in stone as Navratri fasting rules. I believe it's more of a personal choice. Over the years, people have made these rules. Navratri is a period where you restrict yourself from certain foods to cleanse your body. While grains and non-vegetarian dishes are strictly prohibited, beverages like tea and coffee are alright to be consumed."

Shalini Nandwani, a Delhi resident who has been keeping the Navratri fasts since 20 years says, "In our family, coffee and tea are both allowed during Navratri fasting, as well as other beverages like chaas and fresh fruit juices. Packaged or processed beverages are usually avoided."

Homemaker Madhu Bhasin says, "We have been following Navratri for many years, and have always consumed tea and coffee. What we try and avoid are packaged and processed beverages and other products, since they contain preservatives and artificial agents."

Homemaker Sarabjeet Singh says, "Coffee may contain higher caffeine than tea but I don't see why it should be shunned upon during Navratri fasting while tea is rejoiced everywhere. Back in the days, coffee wasn't a popular mass beverage in India, and it still isn't as compared to tea. I doubt there were ever any rules formulated against its consumption during Navratri. It's really a personal choice. What's more important is to avoid whole grains, meat, eggs, alcohol, onion, garlic and excessive spices during this period."

Traditionally, Navratri fasts were followed keeping the changing season in mind. To safeguard the body from various infections, selective food items were included in the diet. Masaledar drinks were avoided, and light beverages like plain chaas were traditionally consumed. Today, both, tea and coffee, as well as fresh fruit juices and milkshakes are consumed by many people who observe Navratri fasting.

6 Members Of Family Found Dead In Telangana, Suicide Suspected

Hyderabad: Six members of a family, including two children, were found dead at their house in Suryapet town of Telangana this morning, the police said.

Four adult members among the dead apparently administered a pesticide to the two children, aged four and two years, last night and consumed it themselves, the preliminary probe suggested. 

The family was reportedly facing a serious financial problem.

The dead were identified as Kasturi Janardhan, his wife K Chandrakala (both in mid-50s), their daughter-in-law K Prabhatha (in her 30s), her two children, and one of Janardhan's sons, K Ashok (26).

Suresh, the couple's elder son and Prabhatha's husband, were missing, said inspector Y Mugalaiah.

The incident came to light this morning. The bodies of the dead were found lying in the same room in the house. "As per the preliminary information, Suresh had borrowed money from several people and the family was facing a serious financial trouble because of this," the police officer told PTI over phone.

Tax refund scam busted in Hyderabad, 200 techies forced to return money

HYDERABAD: A chargesheet filed by Hyderabad Central Crime Station sleuths in the city criminal court has revealed that at least 200 information technology employees, including from Polaris Hyderabad, faked disability and chronic illness of family members in order to fraudulently claim income tax refund. 

CCS sleuths, who investigated the complaint filed by income tax department deputy director M Mohan Babu, found that two income tax practitioners processed the dubious I-T refund claims. 

CCS police filed a chargesheet in the 12th additional chief metropolitan magistrate court at Nampally against two income tax practitioners N Srikanth Goud, 43, and Mohammed Khaleel, 34, both with offices at Venkateswara Colony in Dilshuknagar. CCS made the IT employees witnesses in the case as they repaid the amount they claimed after the income tax department served notices on them. In an ingenious method of making a quick buck, the two income tax practitioners N Srikanth Goud, 43, and Mohammed Khaleel, 34, set up their offices and got in touch with employees of software companies and offered to help them get I-T refund, said CCS assistant commissioner of police K Ram Kumar. 

Explaining the modus operandi of the fraud, investigating officer Ram Kumar said, “Under Section 80 D and 80 DD of the Income Tax Act, refund can be claimed on medical grounds. The two accused approached IT employees and offered to process their claims to get tax refund by stating that their family members are patients of chronic illness. Each one of them got a rebate ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh. The accused took around 10 per cent commission from the IT employees. The total loss to the I-T department in these cases is Rs 1.36 crore. This is said to be only the tip of the iceberg. There could be several practitioners across the city and many employees resorting to this type of fraud.'' One of the accused, Srikanth Goud, is a law degree holder while Mohammed Khaleel is a commerce graduate. Police said the accused have been resorting to this type of cheating for the past five to six years.
