The state government has given approval for setting up of the world's first Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) terminal at Bhavnagar port. Gujarat will be the first state to have the world's first CNG terminal. The plan to build a CNG terminal near Bhavnagar port at a cost of Rs 1900 crore has been approved. The first phase will cost Rs 1300 crore and the second phase will cost Rs 600 crore.

It is planned to develop Liquid Cargo Terminal, Container, and White Cargo Terminal and Ro-Ro Terminal with a capacity of 45 lakh tonnes per annum. Alang-Bhavnagar's reputation as the world's largest shipbreaking yard will be added to the shipbreaking and ship recycling industry. To develop Bhavnagar port, dredging in channel and port basin, construction of 2 lock gates and infrastructure facilities for CNG transportation onshore will be developed. Importantly, with the CNG terminal in operation, the annual cargo capacity of Bhavnagar Port will be 9 million metric tons.
Two new lock gates will be built at the new port
A new project will take shape at the North Quay jetty at Bhavnagar port, while cargo handling will continue with the current arrangement at the concrete jetty facing south. The existing infrastructure of North Quay will be renovated, a draft of 10 meters will be available in the basin, dredging will be done keeping in view, the channel from Bhavnagar port to Anchorage Point will be made wider and deeper. In addition, two new lock gates will be constructed at the new Bhavnagar port, through which the process of cargo handling in the basin will continue without the effect of tides.
