The World Religions Convention was held on September 11, 1893. The whole hall resounded with applause when Swami Vivekananda started his speech by saying 'Sisters and Brothers of America'. This was the first time that the West was facing the Dharmacharya of the East. At that time, Indian culture, study and philosophy were new to the western countries. This famous speech of Vivekananda gave a new direction to the impression of India.

Swami Vivekananda in his speech raised the issue of sectarianism, religious bigotry and violence. He said that sectarianism and bigotry have long taken hold of the earth and this has led to an increase in violence on earth. Often the earth is red with blood. Many civilizations have perished. Who knows how many countries have been destroyed. He also raised the issue of tolerance and sovereignty in his speech.

In 1906, the South African government enacted a new law. The law required registration for people of Indian descent. This was opposed at a meeting of Bharatwanshis in Johannesburg on September 11, in which Gandhiji advocated the use of non-violence for protest. The conflict lasted for seven years. South Africa was then ruled by the British and they sent thousands of Indians to jail for striking, refusing to register, burning registration cards and protesting.
